Curriculum

A CURRICULUM TO GROW WITH YOUR CHILD FROM TODDLER TO KINDERGARTEN

Our curriculum is developed as a continuum. When children enter our school as a toddler they learn and develop skills that our preschool program builds upon the following year. From there, our senior preschool and JK/SK programs are built to further expand on the knowledge and skills that the children are coming in with.

Our own Curriculum Coordinator and Positive Education specialists have developed programs that allow children to receive individualized programming within a rich curriculum. This allows teachers to meet each child where they are at.

Literacy - North Toronto Early Years Learning Centre - Full day and half day Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten programs - Nursery School Toronto, Daycare Toronto, Childcare Toronto, Toddler Toronto

Literacy

Our Literacy Program, Linking Letters, was developed by Catherine Ciardulli, our head of curriculum development. It combines best practices and follows a continuum that allows children to reach their full potential. Linking Letters introduces one literacy skill/letter at a time to ensure that the skills are building off of one another. This helps to enhance comprehension and retention. Our literacy program allows teachers to differentiate the learning meeting each child where they are at.  It is designed to ensure that our students leave North Toronto with a strong foundation in literacy.

Numeracy - North Toronto Early Years Learning Centre - Full day and half day Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten programs - Nursery School Toronto, Daycare Toronto, Childcare Toronto, Toddler Toronto

Numeracy

Children are introduced to number recognition beginning in our toddler program. Whether it is counting numbers on the calendar of the month or counting out objects for an art activity, children are given many opportunities to become familiar with numbers. In our preschool program children are exposed to many different math concepts; ordering of numbers, sequencing, patterning, as well as addition and subtraction. Our mathematics program is integrated into the many other components of our curriculum allowing the children to really solidify their math skills.

Science and Social Studies - North Toronto Early Years Learning Centre - Full day and half day Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten programs - Nursery School Toronto, Daycare Toronto, Childcare Toronto, Toddler Toronto

Science & Social Studies

All of our science programming stems from the interests of the children. This type of inquiry based learning and teaching allows for students to really draw upon their prior knowledge. When children are interested in something, they are at their best and the learning potential is huge. Some topics that have been covered in the past include; transportation, dinosaurs, life cycle, sinking vs floating, seasons and community helpers. A favourite among the children is definitely observing the life cycle of a butterfly.

Music and Visual Arts - North Toronto Early Years Learning Centre - Full day and half day Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten programs - Nursery School Toronto, Daycare Toronto, Childcare Toronto, Toddler Toronto

Music and Visual Arts

Music and Visual Arts are integrated into our daily programming. Music is a large component of our circle time that takes place first thing in the morning. It is a time for children to connect and for the teachers to build community with their students. You will often find children drawing, painting, and creating during their activity time as well as their free play time. There is always some kind of visual arts activity going on at any given moment. Children at this age love to create!

Physical Education - North Toronto Early Years Learning Centre - Full day and half day Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten programs - Nursery School Toronto, Daycare Toronto, Childcare Toronto, Toddler Toronto

Physical Education

Every day children have the opportunity to play meaningful, organized games in our gym or our outdoor space. These games help build gross motor function and work on their coordination as well as their ability to play as a team. Teachers are involved in the activities with the children allowing them to really hone in on the teaching of these skills. We recognize that movement and exercise are important for developing a healthy lifestyle both in mind and body.

North Toronto Early Years is best known for its focus on building character in its students. As parents, we all want our children to be good human beings who care for others and not just themselves. We want them to learn kindness, respect, empathy, cooperation and relationship building skills. At NTEYLC we help to teach your children these interpersonal skills. This is done through a variety of programs as well as through our philosophy of teaching and how we handle any given situation.

Flourishing Tree - North Toronto Early Years Learning Centre - Full day and half day Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten programs - Nursery School Toronto, Daycare Toronto, Childcare Toronto, Toddler Toronto

The Flourishing Tree

Our Head of Character Education, Sherlyne Fletcher, created The Flourishing Tree in order to teach and build character strengths within our students. This program was designed to bridge the gap between home and school, allowing families to continue the learning at home. When a child shows growth in a particular social / emotional area (empathy), the teacher is able to recognize it, bring the child's' awareness to it, and celebrate it. This is then communicated to home and the family is given some guidance on how to continue growing and celebrating this character strength in their child.
